Role of Light in Photosynthesis

What is the role of light in photosynthesis?

  • The light comes in packets called Quanta.  A single quantum of light is known as a Photon.
  • Light travels in waves which have different length.
  • long-wavelength has less energy, and Short-wavelength contains more energy.
  •  The human eye can only see the light of Certain wave-length.
  • The visible light has a wavelength between 400nm (violet)and 700nm(red).
  • The light is composed of Seven different Colors  Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green Yellow, Orange, and Red Ultraviolet rays (gamma, x rays)

  • The Molecules that absorb Sunlight are called pigments.
  • The all-important green pigments constitute Chlorophyll, which Traps light energy and converts it into chemical energy.
  • Among different kinds of chlorophyll, the most widespread are Chlorophyll A and B, etc. The Carotenoids also help in photosynthesis.

The absorption spectrum of chlorophyll A and B show absorption in Violet, blue and red regions, while green,  yellow and orange light is absorbed very slightly, therefore The green light is Reflected Back so the Plants Appears Green.
