Importance of Water

Importance of The Water can be assumed from this fact, that about 70% of the Human Body is composed of water.

Seventy-one Percent of The Earth Surface is occupied by Water. that is why the Planet of the earth is called Blue Planet or Watery Planet.

Definition of Water Pollution
water pollution can be defined as the Addition of some unwanted (toxic) substances into the water, that change the  Physical, Chemical, and Biological Nature of water.

Water Pollution Facts

Water Pollution reduces the amount of freshwater, that can be used for human consumption.

Water pollution can be divided into two types.
  • Rural water pollution.
  • Urban water pollution.
Rural water Pollution:
Rural Water Pollution mostly includes the use of certain chemicals in agriculture including Fertilizers, Pesticides, etc. Those chemicals can be absorbed by land and affect the groundwater table reserves.
  • In Agricultural land, the Chemical fertilizers may go down the Earth and mixes with groundwater aquifers.
  • In some Natural disasters such as heavy rains, flood situations, these chemicals flow (drained off) into the freshwater reserves and pollute them.
  • Excessive use of fertilizers may form a Crest in the soil. it doesn't allow water to pour down into the earth which causes waterlogging and salinity.
Urban water Pollution:
  • Urban areas water is polluted by the addition of Industrial and domestics wastes.
  • Sewerage system carrying wastes from Homes, Offices, and industries is left into Natural water reserves.
  • Although in developed countries about all cities have waste treatment plants that remove most of the Harmful Substances by treating sewerage water, But still, treated water unwanted harmful substances that can be dangerous for life.
  • The hot water thermal power plants can be dangerous for aquatic life, when, it is left off in the ocean.
  • According to a survey report, in Pakistan, 75% of the drinking-water is Unhygienic due to Chemical contamination.
  • Polluted ultimately mix with land water and utilize for drinking and household work.
  • Scientists estimate that 30% of all reported diseases which include Cholera, Typhoid, Diarrhea, Skin irritation, and Jaundice. are Water-born.
  • Seven million children die in Early age due to water-borne diseases.
Causes of Water Pollution
  • Dumping of solid waste into Rivers, Oceans, Lakes, and Ponds.
  • Contamination of water by water pipes lines, because the joints of pipes lines are soldered with lead, which is a toxic substance.
  • The seawater can be a source of pollution due to nuclear damage.
  • Oil Pouring into Sea-water, for example, during the Gulf war 0.5 to 3 billion barrels of oil were poured into the Sea Water.
  • Sewerage system damages the nature of Freshwater when untreated water is left in the  Freshwater reserves such as lakes, rivers, canals, and ponds, etc.
  •  About 389 cusecs untreated Sewage water, is directly left into the River Ravi  (Indus Tributary), whereas in winter season water level of the Ravi River is recorded 400 Cusses. it means that the dilution ratio of Polluted water with fresh water is 1:1.
Water Pollution Effects
  • Polluted water of cities (Sewerage) Causes depletion of dissolved oxygen and ultimately causes the death of aquatic animals.
  • Sixty percent of infant deaths are due to infection of parasite disease, most of them are waterborne.
  • Vegetables grown from polluted water have serious                       Bacteriological Contamination problems.
  • Pollution of river water has a cutoff, its fish production by 5000 tons per year.
  • Water pollution can cause live-stock death by drinking polluted water of canals, lakes, streams Rivers, etc.
  • Water Pollution can be responsible for land pollution, which reduces the fertile land, that could be used for cultivation purposes.
Conclusive Remarks
Clean water intake is a basic necessity for every human, but in under developing countries, water resources are limited, water is used without purification. So any future pollution can play havoc with the lives of the people.
